'Obama's rhetoric hollow as Bush's'

Five protestors, four veterans and one spouse, attempted to blockade a public street used by the military for mass deployments. The convoy was stopped for approximately 10 seconds while police and military personnel shoved them out of the road. Activists later declared their protest a "success" and vowed to return during every successive deployment from Fort Hood, in hopes of forcing the military to deploy soldiers under maximum security conditions. Matthis Chiroux says he was beaten and carried out of the street by soldiers and police using rifles and dogs.

Got your guns New Orleans?

Got your guns New Orleans?

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, police in New Orleans confiscated thousands of guns from residents in an effort to keep guns out of the hands of anyone who wasn't law enforcement. Louisiana residents feel that their constitutional rights were violated and proceeded to sue the city of New Orleans with the help of the NRA. They believe that in the aftermath of Katrina, the city of New Orleans forgot the fundamental rights of the United States.

Alex Jones: 'I'm packing heat, are you?'

The United States constitution says that every citizen has the right to carry a gun for self defense. However, five years ago in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina people were having their guns taken from them and collected by law enforcement. Alex Jones says that much of the looting that occurred in New Orleans in the immediate days after Hurricane Katrina hit land was done by police and other civil officers.

Jordan Flaherty, the author of "Floodlines: Community and Resistance from Katrina to the Jena Six" said he is most concerned for those in New Orleans who have been ignored and those who are still displaced throughout the US. Many of the stories about those who have been forgotten or left behind by the recovery have not been told, argued Flaherty.

Five years after Hurricane Katrina, the homeless population in New Orleans is still one of the highest in the country. Many who lost their homes in Katrina are still living on the streets, and others who came to the city in the aftermath of the storm and the oil spill hoping to find a job also ended up without a job or a place to live. While some places in New Orleans are close to where they were before the storms, others, especially in the lower ninth ward where most of the devastation took place - are still desolate.

The troops are supposed to be assisting Iraqi troops and training them. The problem is that the soldiers, even though they are classified as non combat, are still going out and completing missions assigned to them. Jack Rice says that the US cannot simply say mission accomplished, however the problems that the Iraqis faced before the war are still there and until they are resolved the war is not over.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai Tuesday called for all private security firms in Afghanistan to be disbanded in the next four months. The war in Afghanistan is the most outsourced war in US history. Currently 30 percent of all US forces in Afghanistan are private contractors. Visiting fellow Ann Marlow with the Hudson Institute said Karzai's stance does not make much sense. In fact, members of the Karzai family own a number of the private companies working in the country. It is possible Karzai is shutting down all private firms only to later reopen those companies that belong to his family in order to stifle competition, argued Marlowe. This would not be the first time Karzai attempted such a maneuver.

George Hemminger of Survive and Thrive TV said in this case the individual was lucky the incident was caught on video, because when there are not cameras around it is hard to prove what actually takes place. Hemminger said it is a travesty that the officers have not been fired. So far they have only experienced a reduction in pay. In order to inspire change in policing practices the media needs to cover the issue of police brutality more and bring the issue to the public's attention, argued Hemminger.

RT contributor Wayne Madsen said Petraeus would not be making such comments without permission from the White House, after all... if he were speaking out of turn he would likely have met the same fate as General McChrystal. He said this is unfortunate because he would prefer space be a non-military frontier.

Russia is set to launch Iran's nuclear power plant in Bushehr next week. The US and Israel remain in strong opposition to the nuclear plant. Will this spark a military strike on Iran? Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and RT contributor Wayne Madsen both say no. McGovern does believe an attack by Israel is possible sooner than later, but this shift will only be a small factor in the bigger picture. Madsen argues that US opposition sends the wrong message, both on US-Russia relations and Middle East affairs.

When it comes to immigration issues here in the United States, all the focus seems to be on the U.S./Mexico border. Asylum fraud cases seem to be overlooked by the US media; however, they pose a large threat to America's immigration system. The US Senate has been recalled from August recess to vote on a $600 million border bill to establish military style bases and place drones at the borders to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing over. At the same time many are calling for the repeal 14th amendment of the US Constitution. Immigration activist Ron Gochez said the bill and the idea of changing the 14th amendment are merely attacks on the Latino immigrant community; it is not real immigration reform. The Bush policies of 2008 are being continued, but with greater efficiently under Obama, he said. Obama has in fact deported a greater number of illegal immigrants than the Bush administration did during their time in office. The militarization of the border is also an economic issue, he argued, saying it will cost the American people millions without solving the immigration problem.

Al-Qaida returns to Iraq, bribes American allies

The Sons of Iraq are being offered more than their government salaries by al-Qaida to switch sides and fight against American troops. Jake Diliberto, a former marine who served in Iraq said buying allies and friends never works. He argued that al-Qaida is growing because of the continued NATO and American presence in the Middle East, not because they are being bought off. Iraqis need to be a part of the process to shape their government, they have to take part in their nation state to build it, said Diliberto. Every day troops remain in the region there is fuel for al-Qaida to go, he argued.
