Petraeus vs. Obama? Nope, just part of the plan

Petraeus vs. Obama? Nope, just part of the plan

General Petraeus is making remarks that directly contradict Defense Secretary Gates and President Obama on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. Who is really in charge? Is there a political motive at play? RT contributor Wayne Madsen said Petraeus would not be making such comments without permission from the White House, after all... if he were speaking out of turn he would likely have met the same fate as General McChrystal. Petraeus' comments are part of a bigger picture, since Obama needs to pull back from his withdrawal promises and Gates has announced his plans to leave in 2011, argued Madsen.

Star wars: The militarization of space?

The Annual Space and Missile Defense conference is underway in Huntsville, AL with the theme of 'enabling regional war fighters'. Many argue that the militarization of space is simply wrong, while others argue it is paramount to American national security. Research fellow Baker Spring of the Heritage Foundation and senior fellow Larry Korb of the Center for American Progress debate the links between missile defense, space and the private sector.

Economy sinking, buy gold stay afloat

Economy sinking, buy gold stay afloat

As the economy continues to sink, gold's price has continued to rise and it has climbed to its highest level today. Scott Carter says that gold is a very long term cycle; the conditions that have contributed to the gold market have been extremely favorable. When the United States' economy catches a cold, the entire world catches pneumonia. He adds that there is a large concern over paper economies, such as the United States, which tends to lead to investors buying gold.

Petraeus vs. Obama - Political agenda at play?

General Petraeus has said he does not plan to run for President, but he is also making remarks that directly contradict Defense Secretary Gates and President Obama on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. Is there a political motive at play? RT contributor Webster Tarpley said yes! He argued that while Petraeus said he has no current plans to run, this does not mean he does not have an agenda. When push comes to shove Petraeus may be on the ballot, argued Tarpley.

Well, something like that... Huntsville, Alabama is home to the US Space and Rocket Center, the only place in the country where you can see and experience all things space! It was also the home of Wernher von Braun, the pioneer of US space exploration, and his rocket scientist colleagues, some of who are still alive to tell their story today. So, fasten your seat belts because you're coming along for the special ride!

Space: The final [military] frontier

Space: The final [military] frontier

The Annual Space and Missile Defense conference is underway in Huntsville, AL with the theme of 'enabling regional war fighters'. The group is in the business of promoting missiles and other weapons technology. Space entrepreneur Jeff Manber said the Pentagon and the defense industry have come to realize that regionalization is key to modern war fighting, thus a growing theme in the industry is looking towards finding new ways to decentralize Pentagon weapons responses globally. Space is today a necessary component of America's military theater and the US will act preemptively to ensure their access to space, said Manber. He said this is unfortunate because he would prefer space be a non-military frontier.

China on the rise, surpassing US?

China on the rise, surpassing US?

The latest figures place China as the world's second largest economy, leaving Japan behind. Economists predict that China will become world's biggest economy in the 2020s. But Michel Chossudovsky of the Center for Research of Globalization (GlobalResearch.ca) thinks China may already be number. In terms of productive capabilities, due to sheer size and productive capacity, China surpasses the declining US economy, argued Chossudovsky.

Finally, Melissa Sklarz describes the uphill battle for transgendered Americans seeking equal rights.

Transgenders transforming America

In the US, it's illegal for employers to discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin and sex. Despite these laws, some people are still left out. Attorney Noah E. Lewis with the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund said workplace, housing, public and employment discrimination is all too common in the US transgender community.

Thousands rally for jobs in LA

Thousands rallied in Los Angeles, California calling on the government to provide jobs across the US. California has been hit especially hard by unemployment. Many at the rally were experienced workers who are unable to find jobs, some even claiming they may have been discriminated against because of their experience and age. Further, the protestors called on lawmakers to end the George W. Bush tax cuts in hopes it would free up money for the government to create more jobs. RT's Ramon Galindo reports from Los Angeles.

Melissa Sklarz is the Director of the New York Trans Rights Organization and she is playing a lead role in efforts to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in the New York legislature. Sklarz says it will take time to earn the rights that would protect transgendered people under law. She adds that it took African Americans, gays and lesbians sometimes hundreds of years to gain their rights.

Could Iran go nuclear with Russian help?

Could Iran go nuclear with Russian help?

Russia is set to launch Iran's nuclear power plant in Bushehr next week. The US and Israel remain in strong opposition to the nuclear plant. Will this spark a military strike on Iran? Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and RT contributor Wayne Madsen both say no. McGovern does believe an attack by Israel is possible sooner than later, but this shift will only be a small factor in the bigger picture. Madsen argues that US opposition sends the wrong message, both on US-Russia relations and Middle East affairs.

Workplace discrimination still legal in America

Workplace discrimination still legal in America

In the US, it's illegal for employers to discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin and sex. Despite these laws, some people are still left out. As the case of one transgendered woman in Georgia shows, changing your gender not only means changing your life, but can also mean losing your job. And it's not against the law. Her case is not the minority, but in fact, reveals a much broader trend of a group of Americans who are slipping through the cracks.

Tonight on The 3 Minute Download, a recent article published in Bloomberg states that the United States is bankrupt, as the US continues to fall further into debt what will the outcome be? Plus, the US Senate has been recalled from August recess to vote on a $600 million border bill to establish military style bases and place drones at the borders to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing over.

Asylum fraud: Ignored immigration issue?

Asylum fraud: Ignored immigration issue?

When it comes to immigration issues here in the United States, all the focus seems to be on the U.S./Mexico border. Asylum fraud cases seem to be overlooked by the US media; however, they pose a large threat to America's immigration system. The case of David Lynn vs USA represents how people take advantage of the system by making up false claims of persecution to reap the benefits that come along with being granted an asylum application and remaining in the United States legally.

'Let's get real, the US is bankrupt'

A recent article published in Bloomberg states that the United States is bankrupt, as the US continues to fall further into debt what will the outcome be? Neither spending more nor taxing less will help the country pay its bills. It's a bold statement from professor of economics at Boston University Laurence Kotlikoff.

Border militarization war on Latino community

Border militarization war on Latino community

The US Senate has been recalled from August recess to vote on a $600 million border bill to establish military style bases and place drones at the borders to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing over. At the same time many are calling for the repeal 14th amendment of the US Constitution. Immigration activist Ron Gochez said the bill and the idea of changing the 14th amendment are merely attacks on the Latino immigrant community; it is not real immigration reform. The Bush policies of 2008 are being continued, but with greater efficiently under Obama, he said. Obama has in fact deported a greater number of illegal immigrants than the Bush administration did during their time in office. The militarization of the border is also an economic issue, he argued, saying it will cost the American people millions without solving the immigration problem.
