Mystery over Scottish rock carving found 5,500 miles away in China: Eight-foot rock with name of historic whisky distillery chiselled into it is found on Chinese building site
Discovery made during recent work on resort at Moganshan near Shanghai
Rock was engraved with word 'Glenturret' - a distillery in Crieff, Perthshire
Developers know property used to belong to a Scottish missionary doctot
But they remain puzzled about connection to Glenturret, 5,500 miles away

Mystery surrounds the discover by construction workers in China of a giant piece of rock engraved with the word Glenturret - the name of a Scottish whisky distillery 5,500 miles away.
The discovery came during a recent excavation for a resort at Moganshan, a holiday destination in China two hours from Shanghai.
Developers of the Chinese resort and staff at the historic Glenturret distillery in Crieff in Perthshire, Scotland, remain baffled over the link between the two sites.

One avenue of investigation has emerged after it was revealed some of the China property used to belong to Dr. Duncan Main, a Scottish missionary doctor who dedicated 45 years of his life to working in China in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
But developers are still puzzled about the connection to Glenturret.
Staff at the distillery are baffled too and called on the public to help them solve the last pieces of an intriguing mystery, one that gives a new twist to UK-China trade relations.

Grant Horsfield, founder of 'naked Retreats', which operates a luxury eco-resort in the area and is working on opening more properties, said: 'We know Dr. Duncan Main, one of the most famous missionaries in China at the time, had a castle on the property and that it was used as a summer retreat by him and his hospital staff.

'It was built in 1910 as a sanitorium and known simply as £1 Moganshan. We also know it passed into the hands of the government of Zhejiang for a short time during China's nationalisation and then was handed back to Dr. Main's son, S. Duncan Main.

'We have yet to find a link between Dr. Main and our own region of Crieff, which is some distance away at the foot of the Scottish Highlands.

'We're wondering if perhaps Dr. Main was such a fan of his native drink that he was one of the first importers of Glenturret whisky to China. Another possibility is that the rock has uncovered a link not to Glenturret Distillery but to a British steamship called Glenturret that we also know existed.

'What is clear is that Glenturret made its mark, literally, halfway around the world. We'd love to have someone come forward to shed some more light on what is truly a fascinating story and a very colourful cast of characters.

'Otherwise, for us, it may not be so much the Year of the Monkey as the Year of the Whisky as we try to clear the whole mystery up.'

Space after all: NASA lifts conference ban for Chinese scientists after massive uproar

NASA has reversed the decision to bar six Chinese scientists from a space conference after US astronomers pledged to boycott the event, fighting for academic freedom.
The meeting is due to take place in California in early November, and is set to focus on exoplanets - bodies outside the solar system.
The Chinese scientists were banned from participating, with NASA saying the decision had been made because of their nationality and security issues, AFP reported.
However, the move triggered a wave of outrage among prominent US astronomers.
"The meeting is about planets located trillions of miles away, with no national security implications," Geoff Marcy, an astronomy professor at the University of California, Berkeley, pointed out in an email to the organizers.
China's Foreign Ministry also blasted NASA's denial of the researchers' applications as discriminatory, arguing that politics should have no place at academic meetings.
After a few days, NASA wrote a letter to the Chinese scientists, saying they had looked into the law and found no obstacles to the six attending.
"We have since been able to clarify the intent of the referenced legislation and are pleased to inform you that this decision has been reversed and your paperwork is being reviewed for clearance," Xinhua quoted the letter as saying on Monday.
However, it isn’t clear yet if the move will work: the necessary security checks can take several weeks. Plus, the relevant government offices may still be closed after the US government shutdown.
NASA administrator Charles Bolden responded earlier this month by pledging to review the committee's decision, which he blamed on "mid-level managers" at the agency's Ames Research Center, which is hosting the event.
The confusion was apparently caused by a US law passed in 2011 that prevents NASA funds from being used to collaborate with China.
The organization wasn’t immediately available for comment after the latest news, though.
NASA went through some hard times earlier this month: due to the partial government shutdown and the failure to pass the budget on time, 97 percent of their employees received no salaries in October. Due to that fact, the organization didn’t manage to release an official statement.

France, China to invest $26bn into next generation of UK nuclear power

Britain has embarked on its first nuclear power station in 20 years, which will start delivering energy to 7 million homes from 2023. The deal agreed by UK, France and China will also cut consumer fuel bills by more than 75 pounds a year from 2030.

China will team up with Electrcite de France SA (EDF) to build two nuclear reactors at the Hinkley Point site in southwest England, the Paris-based utility said in a statement released Monday. This will mark the first nuclear construction since Japan’s Fukushima disaster and the first in Great Britain since the Sizewell B power station opened in 1995.
EDF will hold a 45 to 50 percent stake in the pressurized water reactors that will have the capacity to produce 7 percent of UK electricity and power up to 7 million homes. “This also marks the next generation of nuclear power in Britain,” Prime Minister David Cameron was quoted in the statement.
Under the 35 year contract, the consortium could build a second plant to the Sizewell site in Suffolk. The UK government will provide loan guarantees for 65 percent of the construction financing.
“This deal means 16 billion pounds [$26 billion] of investment coming into the country and the creation of 25,000 jobs,” Cameron said, stressing the important role the project will play in helping the UK meet energy needs.
China General Nuclear Corporation (CGN) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) will hold a 30 to 40 percent combined share and Paris- based Areva, will consult on the technology and design and have a 10 percent stake. Up to 15 percent in equity remains up for grabs, and there is a shortlist of candidates which are currently being discussed.
The statement says the project will offer a “fair price for consumers”. It is a timely victory for Cameron as his coalition has come under scrutiny over rising electricity bills and the rising risk of blackouts. The deal is Cameron’s first in an attempt to attract 110 billion pounds of investment into Britain’s outdated electricity industry by 2020.
Electricity prices will be set at 92.5 pounds [$150] per megawatt hour, and lowered to 89.5 pounds [$145.9] if the second Sizewell plant is realized.
Before final contracts are drawn up, EDF is waiting on state-funding from the European Union.
On the last day of his week-long trip to China, British Chancellor George Osborne hinted Chinese investors could grab up to a 100 percent stake in the venture.
Recently China agreed to heavily invest into  the first airport city project in Manchester, estimated at 800 million pounds, and the UK agreed to reform visa applications for Chinese residents.

US corporations destroying America

US corporations destroying America

Corporate America has convinced many in Washington that what is good for them is good for America. Naturally, a tax cut would be in line for them in order to keep pace with countries like China, the same countries these corporations outsource jobs too. The Market Ticker's Karl Denninger says shuffling the deck around doesn't change the problem. When you offshore labor, you can effectively hire slaves in places like China and put your production in places where they don't care if you put your toxic waste in the water.

112th Congress vs the world

112th Congress vs the world

When he assumed the presidency in 2009, President Barack Obama promised a reset of relations with the rest of the world, greater international cooperation and a recall on George W. Bush's so-called cowboy diplomacy. But as the 112th Congress prepares to take their seats after a Republican sweep in the midterm elections, some fear that the new foreign policy and defense leadership is transporting us back to the frosty relations of the Cold War.

US - China human rights hypocrisy

US - China human rights hypocrisy

When it comes to human rights in China, the US talks tough but rarely takes action. Dozens of Chinese dissidents, human rights groups and one US congressman gathered at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Washington DC to denounce the imprisonment of Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. But Washington's dependence on Beijing economically and its eagerness to sell billions of dollars in arms to Taiwan, Japan and South Korea highlight the US's hypocrisy when it comes to human rights.

US behind regime changes around the world .

As Washington's overt support of brutal dictators became too much for Americans to stomach, it was replaced with a new concept for regime change called democracy promotion. US taxpayer's are bearing the burden, as taxpayer money has been widely used to overthrow governments around the world. Asia Times correspondent Pepe Escobar says in the past two or three months corporate press in Brazil has opposed Dilma Rousseff, Lula de Silva's protégé, indirectly supported by NED and Freedom House

Neocons down...but not out

Neocons down...but not out

Their hawkish policies and sky-high defense spending may have cost them the White House and Congress in 2008, but the neoconservatives are down...not out. They gathered less than a block from the White House for a conference on "Restoring America's Leadership of a Democratic World," without ever recognizing the role their policies played in damaging America's image internationally. Conservative leaders like John McCain joined Joseph Lieberman and Buck McKeon to express their support for a permanent US presence in Afghanistan and Iraq, continued defense spending and the imminent threats of Iran and China.

China laps US in efficiency

A construction crew in the South of China constructed a hotel in less than a week; it was built with all pre-fabricated material. It appears the US is afraid of the new economic heights China is reaching after learning of this impressive achievement. China has now surpassed Japan in economic growth, giving the US economy a run for its money

US defense budget bringing down empire?

US defense budget bringing down empire?

With US debt skyrocketing to $13.5 trillion, the rallying cry from Washington is to cut spending. But many politicians refuse to address defense spending, thought it accounts for 58 percent of the discretionary pie, more than a trillion dollars a year all-in, or almost half of what the entire rest of the world combined spends. With the US relying on countries like China in essence to fund its wars and military bases around the world, even mainstream members of the Washington establishment are screaming that the US is bringing on its own demise as an imperial power with the excessive spending it can't afford. A reality that for all it's military spending, the US appears defenseless against

America's yuan big problem

America's yuan big problem

Former Reagan Administration official Paul Craig Roberts writes, "now that a few Democrats and the remnants of the AFL-CIO are waking up to the destructive impact of jobs off shoring on the US economy and millions of American lives". China's economic dominance has the US looking to retaliate to gain back some of its global economic supremacy. Does this mean that the new boogieman for US job growth is China?

"FREE-MARKET" deception is very similar to the so called "DEMOCRACY" deception - both concepts are devised by the very same people - ruling class oligarchy. Just like "free-market" deceives people to think that they control their own fate in the "market" the so called "democracy also deceives people into thinking that their control the political system! But in reality ONE CENTER controls all political parties & media!

BOTH "free-market" and "democracy" are ILLUSIONS! You control NOTHING!
