Maryland Marine John Wood barred from daughter's school over Islam lesson wants no-trespass order overturned in time for her graduation

Marine veteran barred from daughter's school after objecting to Islam lesson now going to court so he can get the ban overturned in time to attend her graduation
John Wood says he was barred from La Plata High School in Maryland after suing the school with his wife Melissa
They claim their 16-year-old daughter was 'indoctrinated into Islam' during world history class
Wood wants no-trespass order lifted as it is his daughter's last semester
Motion says ban violates the First Amendment and his right to free speech
Lawsuit claims students had to 'memorize and recite the Five Pillars of Islam and were subjected to disparaging teachings about Christianity'

A Marine veteran who was barred from his daughter's school after objecting to a lesson about Islam wants the ban overturned in time to attend her graduation.
John Wood and his wife Melissa have filed a civil rights complaint against La Plata High School in Maryland, claiming the district forced their 16-year-old daughter to take classes that promote Islam over Christianity and Judaism.
The lawsuit also says Wood was barred from the school after complaining about the curriculum.
Wood now wants to be allowed back on the grounds to attend his daughter's graduation as she is in her last semester of high school.

John Wood (left) and his wife (Melissa) sued La Plata High School in Maryland, claiming their 16-year-old daughter was forced to take classes promoting Islam. Wood, who says he was barred from the school after his complaint, now wants to be allowed back to attend his daughter's graduation
The Thomas More Law Center, a conservative, Christian law firm based in Ann Arbor, Maryland, has filed a motion asking for an injunction to lift the ban.
In court documents obtained by The Daily Mail Online, attorney Kate Oliveri says the no-trespass orders is in violation of the First Amendment.
The motion, filed against the county as well as Evelyn Arnold, La Plata High School's principal, and Shannon Morris, the vice-principal, says the ban violates Wood's right to free speech as it prevents him from attending parents meetings.

'Not only is Mr. Wood irreparably harmed by the denial of his First Amendment rights—taken from him without due process—but his family, particularly his daughter, also suffers because Defendants deny her the opportunity to share key milestones with her father,' the memorandum in support of the injunction reads.
'Mr. Wood also faces the loss of fundamental, once-in-a-lifetime moments in his daughter’s life, such as the culmination of her entire academic career at her high school graduation and honors convocation.'
The Woods previously sued La Plata High School with his wife Melissa alleging their daughter - identified only as C.W. - spent one day in a modern history class studying Christianity, followed by two weeks immersed in Islam.
According to court documents, the 11th grader 'had to profess the Shahada by claiming ''There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.'''

A motion filed by the Thomas More Law Center, a conservative, Christian law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, says the ban violates the First Amendment and threatens Wood's right to free speech as it keeps him from attending parents meetings
'Such discriminatory treatment of Christianity is an unconstitutional promotion of one religion over another,' President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Law Center Richard Thompson said at the time.
For non-Muslims, reciting such a statement is the equivalent of converting to Islam, Thompson added.
He also said the school failed to clearly make known to students and their families that a study of Islam was to be part of the world history curriculum.
Students were also required to memorize and recite the Five Pillars of Islam and were subjected to disparaging teachings about Christianity, the Woods claim.
'The course also taught false statements such as Allah is the same God worshiped by Christians and Islam is a '''religion of peace'',' Thompson said in the filings.
'A school cannot achieve diversity by punishing and alienating students who hold Judeo-Christian beliefs, while bolstering the doctrines and teachings of other religions.
'Parents must be ever vigilant to the Islamic indoctrination of their children under the guise of teaching history and multiculturalism.
'This is happening in public schools across the country. And they must take action to stop it.'

The Woods say their daughter, identified as C.W., 'had to profess the Shahada by claiming ''There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah" as well as memorizing and reciting the Five Pillars of Islam (file picture)
Additionally, the suit claims that Mr Wood was banned from the school grounds after complaining about the curriculum.
Mr Wood served eight years in the Marine Corps and was deployed in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
He was also deployed to the Pentagon as a firefighter during the September 11 attacks.
The suit also says that, following Mr Wood's complaint, he was told his daughter would fail the subject if she were to pull out.
The family is asking for declaratory and injunctive relief barring the promotion of Islam over other religions on school grounds.
La Plata High School sent a statement to WTOP following the lawsuit, clarifying the curriculum.
'The particular unit in question is on the formation of Middle Eastern empires in which students learned the basic concepts of the Islamic faith and how it, along with politics, culture, economics and geography, contributed to the development of the Middle East,' the statement said.
'Other religions are introduced when they influence or impact a particular historical era or geographic region. For example, when reviewing the Renaissance and Reformation, students study the concepts and role of Christianity.
'When learning about the development of China and India, students examine Hinduism and Buddhism.'

Primary school staff are forced to tell parents to stop smoking CANNABIS and using foul language as they take their children to school

Primary school staff are forced to tell parents to stop smoking CANNABIS and using foul language as they take their children to school

Deputy head Deborah Binns urged parents to 'set good example' to pupils
She penned letter to parents saying she had received 'concerning reports'
Ms Binns has told police about the problem at St John's Primary, Radcliffe
Heathcoat primary in Tiverton, Devon, also warned parents about swearing
Last month, another head told parents not to wear pyjamas at school gates

A primary school has been forced to tell parents to stop smoking cannabis on the school run - while another is reminding parents not to use foul language when dropping off their children.
Deputy head Deborah Binns wrote a strongly-worded letter after receiving 'concerning reports' that the substance was being smoked around St John's Primary in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester.
In the letter, Ms Binns reminded parents they needed to 'set a good example' for their children and that smoking drugs was a 'serious safeguarding concern'.

She also warned that police officers could start patrolling the area to keep a 'close eye' on the situation and that any suspects would be reported to the authorities.
Meanwhile, Heathcoat primary school in Tiverton, Devon, has warned parents to stop swearing when they collect their children from school, urging them to 'be more careful about the words you choose'.
They are the latest in a string of primary schools which have been forced to pen letters about the need to raise standards and set a better example to youngsters.

Last month, one headteacher wrote to parents urging them not to wear pyjamas on the school run, while another head was forced to remind parents about 'toilet etiquette' after it emerged children were urinating in the playground.
Ms Binns wrote: 'We have had concerning reports that parents have been using cannabis around the school premises as they drop off and collect their children. This has been reported by parents and has been noticed by some of the older children.
'This is a serious safeguarding concern and if further complaints are brought to our attention, we will notify the relevant authorities.

'We have informed the community police service and they are likely to be keeping a close eye on the situation.
'Please respect our school as a place of learning and make sure you set an appropriate example within the community.'

Headteacher Jason Harvey said Ms Binns had received complaints from 'a couple of concerned parents' and that staff were working to ensure the school has a 'good reputation'.
The school, which has 138 pupils, was classed as 'satisfactory' in its latest Ofsted report, with those eligible for free school meals at more than twice the national average.
He said: 'They have noticed it going on when they were bringing their children into school in the morning. We don't know how many parents were seen using cannabis.
'We felt there was a need to send a letter to remind people that this is a place of learning and we are trying to set a good example for the children.
'We are trying to make sure that the school has a good reputation.'
He added that there are lots of 'really, really great parents', but that some needed reminded that it is a school.
'I can't legislate for people's actions outside but this is a place of learning. There are things that are appropriate and things that aren't,' he said.
The Tiverton school, which was deemed as 'satisfactory' in its latest Ofsted report, issued its plea in the latest school newsletter.
It read: 'We have sadly noticed that some adults have been swearing on the school grounds when they are picking up their children.
'We know that children get upset when they hear these kinds of words and young children can copy them.

'We would really like it if you could help to keep our school safe by being more careful about the words you choose to use when you are in and around the school.'
Last month, headteacher Kate Chisholm from Skerne Park Academy, Darlington, wrote to parents to ask them to stop dropping off children while wearing their pyjamas.
Ms Chisholm complained about the trend after noticing an increase in the number of parents wearing pyjamas and slippers at the gates - with some even attending school assemblies and meetings in nighttime attire.

The letter divided the school community, with several parents later turning up in pyjamas in protest.
Last week, another primary school headteacher wrote to parents amid concerns some were allowing their children to urinate in the playground at the end of the day.
Kay Church, head at Hannah More Infant School and Grove Junior School in Nailsea, Somerset, blasted the 'totally unacceptable' behaviour, reminding parents about toilet facilities inside the building.
She wrote: 'This type of behaviour is not at all representative of the school. Our ethos is growing and learning together, aspiring to excellence.'

Tornado damaged classrooms, the football stadium and felled lampposts

This incredible footage captures exactly what it is like to be in the path of a 95mph tornado.

The shocking video shows strong winds ripping through an American high school causing utter devastation.

Security camera footage captured the extreme weather as it swept through the grounds of Crockett County High School in Alamo, Tennessee on February 2.

Devastating tornado hits a US high school at 95 mph

Remarkably no-one was injured by the EF-1 tornado, which was reportedly 100 yards wide.
Director of Crockett County Schools, Robert F. Mullins Jr, said that the tornado's path damaged classrooms, building roofs, the football stadium and felled lampposts.

The baseball field, softball field and tennis courts also experienced minor damage caused by debris strewn across the school grounds.

Robert said there is always a possibility of tornadoes in the area during violent thunderstorms.

The tornado formed at approximately 4.55 pm around three miles west to the south west of Alamo.

The security camera shows it battering a fence at the school and throwing debris across what appears to be a parking lot.

A gate is later seen being blown open as large chunks of roofing are sent sprawling by the wind. A chair can even be seen escaping the school.
Another angle shows a flash of lightening as heavy rain adds further drama to the scene.
The tornado is listed as having ended at 5.03 pm about two miles west to northwest of Alamo.

A school minibus has crashed into a truck in France, killing at least six children a day after another road accident involving a school bus left two youngsters dead.
The head-on smash with a lorry carrying rubble occurred around 7:15am local time near Rochefort in the western Charente-Maritime region.
Jerome Servolle, a local police official, said a 'gate-like object' had swung open on the truck, slicing through the vehicle at window height.

He said: 'The word chaos is not strong enough. This is such a tragedy.'
Herve Blanche, Rochefort's mayor, confirmed the ‘horrific accident’ had claimed the lives of six children, and left at least three others seriously injured. He said the causes of the crash were under investigation.
A witness to the aftermath of the crash said: ‘It is a scene of chaos. The vehicles have been smashed to pieces, and emergency workers are helping survivors.’

The bus had been travelling from the Ile d’Oleron - the island off France’s Atlantic coast - to the town of Surgeres.
President Francois Hollande extended his ‘deepest sympathies’ to friends and families of the victims, who have not been identified.
Yesterday two children, aged 12 and 15, died when a school bus veered off a road in snowy conditions near the Swiss border in eastern France.
The school bus was carrying 32 children on its daily trip to the village school in Montbenoit when it 'left the road' in snowy conditions, a police source in that case said.
Investigations into the exact cause of both accidents have already been opened.
A total of 3,464 people died on French roads in 2015 – a 2.4 percent increase on 2014. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve blamed the spike on ‘an increase in risky behaviour that can lead to fatalities’.
Mr Cazeneuve also said drivers were ‘too relaxed’ when it came to following the road rules, and that many motorists continued to drive ‘at excessive speed’.

Former student, 21, is suing elite private school for $600,000 after he was ‘tormented, assaulted and stomped on by other pupils’

Former student, 21, is suing elite private school for $600,000 after he was ‘tormented, assaulted and stomped on by other pupils’

A man, 21, is suing a prestigious Brisbane school over alleged bulling
He claims he was severely bullied physically and verbally for three years
His nose was broken at age 10 and he was stomped on two years later
He is seeking $600,000 in damages for future loss of income due to the impact of the alleged bullying on his academic performance
The former students says he suffers ongoing mental health issues

A former Brisbane Boys College student who claims he endured physical and verbal bullying as a young pupil is suing the prestigious school for $600,000 in damages.
The legal action has been lodged against the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association, trading as BBC, and relates to a period spanning February 2004 to February 2007.
In documents filed in Queensland's District Court on Wednesday, it's alleged the boy was the target of derogatory taunts as well as physical attacks.
The former student claims when he was just 10-year-old he suffered a broken nose so severe it required surgery, in an incident which allegedly occured at the school on November 15, 2005.

Court documents claim the boy finally left the school at the advice of a doctor after the student was allegedly pushed to the ground and stomped on, leaving a 'shoe-imprint shaped bruise' on his back, according to the Brisbane Times.
The complainant, who turned 21 on Wednesday, claims he now suffers from ongoing depression, anxiety and has had suicidal thoughts after being the victim of 'ongoing ridicule' from Year Five to Year Eight.
The man is seeking damages for future loss of income, claiming his experiences at BBC seriously hindered his academic performance and, as a result, have disadvantaged his job prospects.
'He suffered psychiatric injury which will likely mean time off work or being forced to cease work earlier than he would otherwise have done so,' his lawyer, Peter Black, told the court on Wednesday according to the Brisbane Times.

Mr Black's client has undergone psychological counselling to assess the extent of his distress and impact on his mental health.
The court heard that the former student and his family are extremely dissatisfied with the school's response and say the students allegedly involved were not reprimanded.
'Despite complaints by our client and his mother about this course of conduct, the school took no steps or no adequate steps to protect our client from the harmful and offending behaviour,' Mr Black told the court.
'His three years of schooling at BBC were painful, agonising and mentally draining as he endured daily torment both verbally and physically.'
The school did not have legal representation present at the brief hearing. The former BBC student will commence legal proceedings against the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association.
