Tony Blair today insisted economic migration was good for Britain as employment data showed two million EU workers have jobs in the UK.
The former prime minister intervened on the European debate in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
Mr Blair's remarks come as David Cameron battles to finish his renegotiation ahead of a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU - which Mr Blair said he was against.
In a translation of the interview, Mr Blair insisted the 'interest' of the UK staying in the EU should be 'evident to all'.
Employment data out today showed the number of EU workers with jobs in Britain grew by 200,000 in 2015 and now stands at 2.1 million.
Mr Blair said: 'There are three types of immigration.
'The economic one (it) is shown that is good, with appropriate rules, it has been seen in the US, as in Britain.
'Then, one of the refugees: Europe must open the door, for moral reasons, to those who flee from persecution.
'But we have to check the third type of immigration: that among those who flee do not hide extremists.'
Mr Blair said it would be 'unreasonable' for Britain to stand alone in the world when there were giant nations such as China, India and the United States.
He said: 'From the economy to security: only by being together we can defend ourselves.'
The former Labour leader repeated his belief that there were some areas for Europe to integrate further.


He said: 'There are fields in which integration would be more advantageous, from security to energy, others in which diversity is celebrated.
'However, instead of continuing an endless discussion about the type of institutions to give to the EU, sometimes an excuse for inaction, we must ask ourselves what we really want from Europe.
'And strive to give Europe greater economic growth, less unemployment and more innovation.'
Mr Blair's intervention comes as the Prime Minister was warned he will get nothing else from EU leaders as France digs in over City regulation and Eastern Europe rebels over migrant benefits.
The Prime Minister will travel back to Brussels tomorrow for a crucial summit he hopes will allow him to formally call the referendum as soon as Friday night.
But ahead of what could be all-night talks, Mr Cameron will be forced to defend his draft deal on several fronts.
EU Council president Donald Tusk has warned the leaders will have to 'walk an extra mile' to conclude the deal, while Polish Europe Minister Konrad Szymanski warned 'unless something changes we are in for a very long night'.

An English breakfast - which could become a brunch - has been planned in Brussels for Friday morning where the deal could be finalised.
Mr Cameron was said to be 'stressed' at yesterday's meetings in the European Parliament.
But following the latest talks, a new version of the agreement will emerge later today as behind the scenes discussions continue furiously until the EU leaders formally sit down tomorrow afternoon.

It makes clear Mr Cameron can expect no additions to his agreement.

Concessions to Britain must not 'affect the operation of the euro area', France has insisted.
A block of eastern European nations have raised a series of objections to the draft deal on migrants.
Czech Europe minister Tomas Prouza yesterday insisted changes must only apply to new migrants.
He said the deal must mean 'people already in the UK can play according to the existing rules'.
Sources told The Times some MEPs could be like 'monkeys with guns' when they get their hands on the deal - which will not happen until after the referendum.
Hungarian MEP Gyorgy Schopflin later told the BBC: 'I do like the idea of myself being a monkey with a gun.'
Even close allies such as Denmark, which is supportive of the deal, is eager to ensure the 'emergency brake' on migrant benefits is not picked up by other member states.

The unemployment rate in the UK remains at its lowest level in a decade last year, official figures revealed today.
The number of jobless fell by 60,000 to 1.69million in the last three months of 2015 - keeping the unemployment rate at 5.1 per cent.
Three in four people in the UK are in work, Office for National Statistics figures from the last three months of 2015 show.

The 74.1 per cent employment rate is an all-time high since records began in 1971, with 31.4million people in work - a rise of more than half a million in a year.
But the figures showed another slow growth in wages - average earnings increased by 1.9 per cent in the year to December - 0.2 per cent down on the previous month.


ONS statistician Nick Palmer said the 'subdued' growth in earnings was disappointing.
'While the employment rate continues to hit new highs and there are more job vacancies than ever previously recorded, earnings growth remains subdued and markedly below the recent peak of mid-2015,' he said.
Ministers were hoping to see the unemployment rate fall below 5.1 per cent and despite staying at its lowest level since 2006, today's figures will be seen as a touch disappointing.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefit fell by nearly 15,000 to an overall total of 760,200.
Today's figures show the number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits is at its lowest level since 1975.
The employment rate of people aged 50 to 64 is also at a new record high of 70.1 per cent, although the figures do not distinguish between part-time and full-time work.
The region in the UK with the lowest rate of unemployment is the South West, where 3.7 per cent of the population are jobless.
The North East remains the region with the highest unemployment rate. The jobless total fell by just 2,000 in the last quarter of last year and 8.1 per cent of the North East are without a job.
In Scotland unemployment stands at 5.8 per cent - the same rate as Northern Ireland, which recorded no change in the total number of unemployed on the previous quarter.
In Wales, the number of jobless fell by 12,000 in three months to 5.3 per cent.
Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones said the figures showed Wales was 'continuing to outperform the UK as a whole'.
'The increase in employment, decrease in unemployment and fall in economic inactivity in Wales over the last 12 months have all been at rates of more than double those of the UK as a whole.
'Claimant count in Wales has also fallen faster than across the UK,' he said.
Iain Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said: 'February is another record-breaking month with the employment rate now at the highest it has ever been and wages continuing to grow.
'At a time when we are seeing the number of workless households at its lowest ever, this is further proof that our economic and welfare reforms are delivering more security and providing opportunities that give families the best chance in life.'

Children in the UK are less happy than those in Romania, Poland and Algeria, an international study released today has revealed.
Only youngsters living in South Korea, Nepal and Ethiopia fared worse than those in England, with the country ranking 13th out of 16 countries for life satisfaction, according to the research survey by Children's Worlds.
Young people across the world took part in a questionnaire as part of the survey, and were quizzed on their family and home life, bullying, personal well-being and views on children's rights, as well as their overall happiness.

The results released this morning form part two of the three-stage survey, in which eight-year-olds in Romania, Columbia, Spain, Israel, Algeria, Turkey, Malta, Norway, Germany, South Africa, Estonia, Ethiopia, Nepal and South Korea were also quizzed about their lives.


Children in England were questioned on behalf of those in the rest of the UK, with 990 eight-year-olds taking part.
They were also asked about friendships, money and possessions, school life, the area where they live and use of their time.

When it came to over all life satisfaction, children in Romania came out on top, with youngsters on average rating their happiness as 9.08 out of 10. Poland was second with nine out of 10 and Columbia third with 8.93.
Children in England gave an average score of 8.39, below than the global average of 8.5.
But as well as the low score on life satisfaction, children in England also ranked towards the bottom of the table when it came to happiness in their family lives, coming in at 12th place with Catalonia in Spain top and Nepal bottom.
More than two thirds of English children said they feel safe at home, while on friends, England came mid-table when young people were asked if they are satisfied with their relationships.
Of all 16 countries, England did not rank any higher than eighth place for any of the questions.

When it comes to material possessions, almost all English respondents said they had access to good clothes, compared to 85 per cent in Ethiopia - and 88 per cent of British children indicated they have access to the internet, compared to just 6 per cent in Nepal.
Asked about bullying at school, a fifth of children in England said they had been hit by fellow pupils more than three times in the last month, compared to almost a quarter in Estonia and 6 per cent in South Korea.
Looking at issues around how young people see themselves, children in England came in the bottom five when asked about their appearance and body. Colombia and Romania came top.
Work on the study was carried out by researchers in the participating countries, with an invitation to other nations wanting to take part. The US was involved in the first wave of the project, which was presented in 2012 and involved eight, 10 and 12-year-olds, but not the second.

Gwyther Rees, of the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York, which carried out the research in England, said: 'There are some quite troubling messages from England and the picture is quite similar to what we found with older age groups.
'Children are happy at home and with friends but less happy at school where there seems to be an issue around bullying and being left out.'
Simon Sommer, head of research at the Jacobs Foundation, which funded the work, said the project is 'groundbreaking', revealing information from the eight-year-olds' own perspectives.
He said: 'The Jacobs Foundation continues to support Children's Worlds, because we are convinced that it will deliver unique information valuable for everyone who is interested in understanding and improving the lives of children and youth.'

The Prime Minister is considering putting all terrorist prison inmates into a single jail which has been dubbed the British Alcatraz.
The jail, would hold all 131 Islamist inmates, convicted of terror offences, in a single secure unit to stop them infecting other prisoners with their extremist views.
The policy has been recommended by a new review into radicalisation in British prisons, and David Cameron said hinted earlier this week he is 'prepared to consider major changes'.

It would reverse the current policy of dispersing dangerous inmates across eight prisons, which has been in place for 50 years. This stops them creating gangs and power structures within the jail.
One prison source told The Times that it would be better to maintain the the ability to move prisoners, but agreed it would be a good idea to segregate them to stop them 'infecting other inmates with their views.


There are concerns that putting all radicals in one prison, or a secure unit within a jail such as Belmarsh, would give them another reason for protest, and be considered a British Guantanamo Bay.
The proposed jail has been dubbed 'The British Alcatraz', likened to the American jail which was created to house the country's most dangerous inmates, all in one place.
The idea behind Alcatraz was to separate them from other prisoners so they could not influence others with their bad behaviour, similar to the purpose of separating Islamist extremists.
The review also recommends calling former soldiers into young offenders institutions, and for them to run their own cadet corps.

Triple murder suspect Arthur Simpson-Kent is expected to be flown back to the UK later today.
The 48-year-old is suspected of killing EastEnders actress Sian Blake and their two children, Zachary, eight, and Amon, four, in Kent in December last year.
The hairdresser is currently being held in the west African country, where he was arrested three weeks after Ms Blake was found dead.
He agreed to be brought back to the UK at a court hearing in Ghana earlier this month.

Ms Blake and her children were last seen on December 13, and were found buried in the back garden of the family's home in Erith, Kent, on January 5.
Police had spoken to Simpson-Kent at the house on December 16, and returned two days later to find the property empty. He arrived in Ghana the following day, and was arrested on January 9.


Scotland Yard is under investigation by the police watchdog for the way it handled the missing persons inquiry, and why it took more than three weeks to find the bodies of Ms Blake and her sons.
The back garden of the house was only thoroughly searched in early January, after murder squad detectives had been called in.
Ms Blake played Frankie Pierre in 56 episodes of EastEnders between 1996 and 1997. She was suffering from motor neurone disease before she died.

An Australian teenager has appeared in a video saying the Islamic State will keep fighting until there is an Islamic Caliphate established in Britain and the United States.

A new Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) propaganda video purportedly shows Australian teen Abdullah Elmir standing in front of dozens of IS fighters, brandishing weapons and warning the UK and US that the militants will not give up.

“To the leaders, to [US President] Obama, to [Australian PM] Tony Abbott I say this: these weapons that we have, these soldiers, we will not stop fighting, we will not put down our weapons until we reach your lands, until we take the head of every tyrant, and until the black flag is flying high in every single land,” says Elmir.

"Until we put the black flag on top of Buckingham Palace, until we put the black flag on top of the White House, we will not stop, and we will keep on fighting,” he adds.

The video is the most recent entry in the ‘Message from Mujahid’ propaganda series released by IS.

Elmir is just 17 years old and comes from Australia. Telling his parents that he was going on a fishing trip, he left the country in June. He was accompanied by a 16-year-old boy, who flew with him to Turkey and then crossed the border into Syria to join IS, according to ABC News. The younger boy’s father intercepted them and took him back to Sydney.

Would-be jihadist Elmir may have been “brainwashed,” a family member told the Daily Telegraph. “I don’t know what these kids get into,” the unnamed relative said. “They don’t know how to fight … they should be getting an education and building this country up.”

Elmir is by no means alone as young IS sympathizer. Three American teenage girls from a Denver suburb stole $2,000 from their parents, skipped school on Friday and flew to Germany. The parents reported the girls missing when the school called to say one of the girls had failed to turn up at her class.

Authorities think the three might have been trying to join Islamic State fighters in Syria. They were arrested at Frankfurt Airport over the weekend by the FBI and returned to Colorado to be reunited with their parents, FBI spokeswoman Suzi Payne told the Associated Press.

A US official said the girls – two sisters, ages 17 and 15, and a 16-year-old friend – were headed toward Turkey en route to Syria. Investigators were reviewing evidence, including the girls’ computers, in the hope that they would discover whether there were “like-minded” friends in their social circle, and whether they had any contacts in Syria.

The US Attorney’s Office in Denver declined to comment on the case, and it is unclear whether the girls will face charges, according to the AP.

Another Colorado teen, Shannon Conley, pleaded guilty to charges a month ago that she conspired to help militants in Syria. Conley was arrested in April as she boarded a flight she thought would take her to the Middle East. She told agents she wanted to marry a suitor she met online who said he was a Tunisian man fighting with IS in Syria. If Conley is found guilty, she could face five years in federal prison, and a fine of $250,000.

France, China to invest $26bn into next generation of UK nuclear power

Britain has embarked on its first nuclear power station in 20 years, which will start delivering energy to 7 million homes from 2023. The deal agreed by UK, France and China will also cut consumer fuel bills by more than 75 pounds a year from 2030.

China will team up with Electrcite de France SA (EDF) to build two nuclear reactors at the Hinkley Point site in southwest England, the Paris-based utility said in a statement released Monday. This will mark the first nuclear construction since Japan’s Fukushima disaster and the first in Great Britain since the Sizewell B power station opened in 1995.
EDF will hold a 45 to 50 percent stake in the pressurized water reactors that will have the capacity to produce 7 percent of UK electricity and power up to 7 million homes. “This also marks the next generation of nuclear power in Britain,” Prime Minister David Cameron was quoted in the statement.
Under the 35 year contract, the consortium could build a second plant to the Sizewell site in Suffolk. The UK government will provide loan guarantees for 65 percent of the construction financing.
“This deal means 16 billion pounds [$26 billion] of investment coming into the country and the creation of 25,000 jobs,” Cameron said, stressing the important role the project will play in helping the UK meet energy needs.
China General Nuclear Corporation (CGN) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) will hold a 30 to 40 percent combined share and Paris- based Areva, will consult on the technology and design and have a 10 percent stake. Up to 15 percent in equity remains up for grabs, and there is a shortlist of candidates which are currently being discussed.
The statement says the project will offer a “fair price for consumers”. It is a timely victory for Cameron as his coalition has come under scrutiny over rising electricity bills and the rising risk of blackouts. The deal is Cameron’s first in an attempt to attract 110 billion pounds of investment into Britain’s outdated electricity industry by 2020.
Electricity prices will be set at 92.5 pounds [$150] per megawatt hour, and lowered to 89.5 pounds [$145.9] if the second Sizewell plant is realized.
Before final contracts are drawn up, EDF is waiting on state-funding from the European Union.
On the last day of his week-long trip to China, British Chancellor George Osborne hinted Chinese investors could grab up to a 100 percent stake in the venture.
Recently China agreed to heavily invest into  the first airport city project in Manchester, estimated at 800 million pounds, and the UK agreed to reform visa applications for Chinese residents.
