Tony Blair today insisted economic migration was good for Britain as employment data showed two million EU workers have jobs in the UK.
The former prime minister intervened on the European debate in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
Mr Blair's remarks come as David Cameron battles to finish his renegotiation ahead of a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU - which Mr Blair said he was against.
In a translation of the interview, Mr Blair insisted the 'interest' of the UK staying in the EU should be 'evident to all'.
Employment data out today showed the number of EU workers with jobs in Britain grew by 200,000 in 2015 and now stands at 2.1 million.
Mr Blair said: 'There are three types of immigration.
'The economic one (it) is shown that is good, with appropriate rules, it has been seen in the US, as in Britain.
'Then, one of the refugees: Europe must open the door, for moral reasons, to those who flee from persecution.
'But we have to check the third type of immigration: that among those who flee do not hide extremists.'
Mr Blair said it would be 'unreasonable' for Britain to stand alone in the world when there were giant nations such as China, India and the United States.
He said: 'From the economy to security: only by being together we can defend ourselves.'
The former Labour leader repeated his belief that there were some areas for Europe to integrate further.


He said: 'There are fields in which integration would be more advantageous, from security to energy, others in which diversity is celebrated.
'However, instead of continuing an endless discussion about the type of institutions to give to the EU, sometimes an excuse for inaction, we must ask ourselves what we really want from Europe.
'And strive to give Europe greater economic growth, less unemployment and more innovation.'
Mr Blair's intervention comes as the Prime Minister was warned he will get nothing else from EU leaders as France digs in over City regulation and Eastern Europe rebels over migrant benefits.
The Prime Minister will travel back to Brussels tomorrow for a crucial summit he hopes will allow him to formally call the referendum as soon as Friday night.
But ahead of what could be all-night talks, Mr Cameron will be forced to defend his draft deal on several fronts.
EU Council president Donald Tusk has warned the leaders will have to 'walk an extra mile' to conclude the deal, while Polish Europe Minister Konrad Szymanski warned 'unless something changes we are in for a very long night'.

An English breakfast - which could become a brunch - has been planned in Brussels for Friday morning where the deal could be finalised.
Mr Cameron was said to be 'stressed' at yesterday's meetings in the European Parliament.
But following the latest talks, a new version of the agreement will emerge later today as behind the scenes discussions continue furiously until the EU leaders formally sit down tomorrow afternoon.
A review of every country's negotiating position, published in The Telegraph, have revealed Mr Cameron's last minute visit to Paris on Monday night has failed to resolve French issues.
It makes clear Mr Cameron can expect no additions to his agreement.
Francois Hollande has set out a series of red lines, including a bar on any veto of non-eurozone countries over the euro members.
Concessions to Britain must not 'affect the operation of the euro area', France has insisted.
A block of eastern European nations have raised a series of objections to the draft deal on migrants.
Czech Europe minister Tomas Prouza yesterday insisted changes must only apply to new migrants.
He said the deal must mean 'people already in the UK can play according to the existing rules'.
Sources told The Times some MEPs could be like 'monkeys with guns' when they get their hands on the deal - which will not happen until after the referendum.
Hungarian MEP Gyorgy Schopflin later told the BBC: 'I do like the idea of myself being a monkey with a gun.'
Even close allies such as Denmark, which is supportive of the deal, is eager to ensure the 'emergency brake' on migrant benefits is not picked up by other member states.

A former nun who spent her final years 'living as a maid' has left a mystery $2 million to a Jesuit society - despite never earning more than $20,000 a year.
Anna Kurzweil, who never married and had no children, left relatives puzzled after she gave the grand sum in her will - while only leaving them $5,000 a piece.
And while the donation's recipient, Society of Jesus, may not come as a surprise - Kurzweil had devoted much of her life to God - the hefty sum certainly does.
But Kurzweil's relatives told Kansas City Star that the money must be the result of wise investing and that she was 'sharp and thrifty' with money.
They said she did inherit a small nest egg left after the family’s three farms were sold and divvied up among the children and saved from there.
Kurzweil, who died aged 100 in 2012, had been a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, a parish at 1001 E. 52nd St., near Rockhurst University and had lived in a small house nearby.
Her nephew John Van De Vyvere told Kansas City Star: 'Nobody knew she had that kind of money.
'I think even the people at the bank were surprised.'
Relatives said that she had been living off a thousand-dollar-a-month pension.
And John Fitzpatrick, a provincial assistant for the Jesuits, told Religion News Services that Kurzweil had 'exemplified the power of planned giving' and that the gift was unrestricted, meaning the order may use the money however it wishes.

According to the paper, Kurzweil grew up the youngest of eight children on a farm in Grandview, Kansas.
After college she became a schoolteacher, which is where she had her heart broken by a fellow colleague - spurring her to commit to a life of God.
In an excerpt from her journal, published by the papers she writes: 'Then. I made my commitment to live for God.'
She joined the order of Sisters of Loretto post- Word War II, but left in the mid fifties to care for her mother.
After her mother's death she traveled the world, working at one point in a leper colony in New Guinea.
She spent her final years living in a small house in Rockhurst.
Nephew Harold Kurzweil told the paper: 'She had gone through a lot and by that time lived pretty much like an old maid.'

Rapper 50 Cent has launched a scathing attack on boxer Billy Dib, labelling the Australian 'ungrateful' and claiming TV network HBO deemed him 'unwatchable' after Dib publicly accused the rapper of owing him one million dollars.
Dib was one of 50 Cent's first clients when he launched a boxing promotions company in July 2012, however their relationship turned sour when the business went bankrupt and the Australian claimed he was owed more than $1 million.
Dib, whose wife Sara died from cancer last September, will make his return to the ring against Thailand's Sukkasem Kietyongyuth in a super featherweight bout on February 26 at Sydney's Emporium Function Centre.
In the lead-up to his return to fighting later this month, the former IBF world champion labelled the venture with the rapper his 'worst career move', prompting 50 Cent - born Curtis James Jackson III - to hit back via Instagram.

'The truth is Billy Dib is an ungrateful fighter who was deemed unwatchable by premium networks like Showtime and HBO when I met him,' 50 Cent wrote; calling Dib a 's***head'.
'With a record of 35-1 (21 KOs), Dib must have fought 21 cab drivers in Australia because Evgeny Gradovich with a record of 15-0 (8 KOs) beat the s*** out of him, despite taking the fight on a month's notice.'
In the stinging rant 50 cent also claims that world champion Floyd Mayweather 'was mad with him for opting to sign Dib in the first place.'
50 Cent also claimed Dib wasn't capable of fighting on the world stage at the intense level in America.
'It's no secret that the level of competition and talent, fighting in America is the highest. The best fighters in the world come here to fight,' he said.

'8 Months later, I put Dib on the Manny Pacquiao undercard for the rematch with Gradovich. He got knocked the f**k out.
'I can only set the fight up ... I can't fight for you, punk! I didn't take a dime of your money. They call me a lot of s**t, but never a thief.'
World champion boxer Billy Dib spoke out last month about his grief following the tragic death of his young wife, who lost her battle with cancer.
The 30-year-old laid his wife Sara, 21, to rest in an emotional funeral service held at Rookwood cemetery in Sydney last September.
Ms Dib lost her fight just eight weeks after she was diagnosed with leukaemia, following complications with her treatment.
'It's still raw, it will always be. I supposed no one can understand this sort of grief until they suffer it,' the Sydney boxer told The Daily Telegraph.
'There's no training that prepares you for this and no amount of praying, begging, pleading and crying changes the reality of the emptiness you feel.'


The couple cancelled their December wedding - and instead moved forward plans to get married in a civil ceremony in August shortly after discovering her illness.
But just one month after walking down the aisle, Dib was comforted by family and friends, including his politician brother Jihad Dib as they paid a poignant tribute to Sara at her burial.

And four months on, the grief-stricken boxer revealed that he visits her grave every day.
'Every day I visit Sara, I am grateful because I was lucky enough to have her in my life, even if for too short a time,' he said.
Following his wife's death, Dib shared a heartbreaking tribute accompanied by a photograph of the couple's hands on social media.
'To God we belong and to God we shall return. At 11.30pm last night, my heart passed away. Sara Selim Dib, my best friend, my soul, my everything, my angel forever,' he wrote on Facebook.
The former world champion spent the final days - leading up to her death - sleeping on the floor of her hospital room.
