A classic car once owned by comedian Eric Morecambe has been put on sale for £150,000 – a staggering £145,000 more than the entertainer paid for it nearly 50 years ago.

The star bought the Jensen Interceptor for just £4,500 at the height of his fame in September 1968 and kept it in the garage of his home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

He was said to be very fond of driving the sports car and was behind the wheel when he suffered his first heart attack in November 1968 after appearing at Batley variety club in Leeds with Ernie Wise.

Following his death in May 1984, the car remained within his estate until it was sold to Silverstone Auctions in Warwickshire for £27,000.

It has since been fully restored and went on display at the London Classic Car Show at the ExCel arena in London Docklands this weekend with an estimated value of £150,000.

Work has been carried out to the engine, braking system, rear axle, body and exhaust.

The Interceptor was said to be Mr Morecambe's favourite car, according to his former chauffeur Mike Fountain who ferried him and his wife Joan around for decades.

In an interview in 2007, he revealed: 'There was no room at all (in the back) for a third person. It was more of a sports car – that was the only downside.

'When Eric and Joan went out together and I was driving, someone had to be screwed up in the back. It usually turned out to be Eric.'

However, despite being fond of the motor, the comic also had issues with the car when he first purchased it from a factory in West Bromwich, on September 23, 1968.

He was dissatisfied with rust to the wheels and bumpers and pitted chrome, stating that 'it is not what I expect of a £4,500 motor car', in correspondence with Jensen Motor Company Managing Director A.W. Wickers, in 1970.

In a letter to the company chief, he wrote: 'Whilst bearing in mind that even the best chrome does not last for ever, the car has not had much use as the mileage is now only fourteen-and-a-half thousand miles and has always been kept in a garage.

'As for the paintwork, I would refrain from comment, but would say that it is not what I expect of a £4,500 motor car.'

Not wanting to upset the entertainer, Mr Wickers had work carried out to resolve the problems.

Eric Morecambe was one half of British comedy double Morecambe and Wise.

The duo learned their trade in music halls up and down the country until radio and TV beckoned.

Their first television show, Running Wild in 1954, was not a success and one critic even wrote 'Definition of the week: TV set—the box in which they buried Morecambe and Wise.'

Seven years later at ITV they launched Two of a Kind with writers Dick Hills and Sid Green. In 1968, they were signed to the BBC where they hired Eddie Braben to write their shows.
Their theme tune was Bring Me Sunshine and their famous dance was based on one performed by Groucho Marx in the film Horse Feathers. In 1976, they were both awarded the OBE.
Mr Morecambe suffered from heart trouble and had his first coronary in 1968, when he was 42.
Although he recovered, it was always feared he would have another and on May 28, 1984 - two weeks after his 58th birthday - he died after taking part in a show hosted by his close friend and comedian Stan Stennett at the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.
Meanwhile, Ernie Wise died in 1999.
On July 23, 1999, the Queen unveiled the statue of Eric on the promenade at Morecambe.

Two blasts in the central Syrian city of Homs killed at least 46 people in one of the deadliest attacks to hit the city in five years of civil war.

More than 100 people were wounded in the twin car bomb attacks in the city centre's Zahra district, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Syrian state television quoted Homs provincial governor Talal Barazi as saying at least 25 people had been killed.

Zahraa neighbourhood is populated mainly by members of President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite sect

Graphic footage from pro-Assad television channels showed charred corpses buried among rubble, damage to shop fronts and debris littering a wide area. Many cars were on fire, sending out plumes of black smoke. Wounded people walked around dazed.

The Observatory said the attack was the second most deadly of its kind in Homs since 2011, and the deadliest for almost a year and a half.

Once dubbed the capital of the Syrian revolution, Homs city is now almost completely controlled by the Syrian government.

The only exception is Waer district, which is being gradually turned over to the government under a deal with opposition fighters.

Most of the bombing attacks in the city over the past months have been claimed by ISIS, which controls parts of the Homs province including the historic town of Palmyra.

Zahra neighbourhood in particular has been the main target of the extremist groups as civilian residents there are mostly Alawites, the minority sect of Syria's ruling clan - including president Bashar al-Assad.

Syrian troops have been on the offensive in different parts of the country under the cover of Russian airstrikes.
The latest attacks come as US secretary of State John Kerry said that a provisional agreement had been reached with Russia on the terms of a ceasefire in the war-torn country.
Kerry told reporters in the Jordanian capital Amman that he had spoken with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov again on Sunday on the terms of a ceasefire agreed by world powers earlier this month.

'We have reached a provisional agreement, in principle, on the terms of the cessation of hostilities that could begin in the coming days,' Kerry said.

'It is not yet done and I anticipate that our presidents, President (Barack) Obama and President (Vladimir) Putin, may well speak somewhere in the next days or so in order to try to complete this task,' Kerry told a press conference with Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh.

Hopes for ceasefire, which had been due to take hold on Friday, had floundered as fresh violence shook Syria last week.

But Kerry was optimistic that it could still be implemented.

'We are in fact making progress even as a I stand here today,' he said. 'We are closer to a ceasefire today than we have been.'

A mother accidentally killed her three-year-old son while learning to drive the family car for the first time, an inquest heard today.
Mother-of-two Lyndsay Turner, 34, described how her 'foot slipped' and her Citroen C4 'jolted forward' and ran over her much-loved little boy Liam.
Mrs Turner was pulling into a parking area near their home in Adland Road, Watton, Norfolk, when she hit her son as he played nearby.
The boy's father Stephen, 37, moved the toddler from underneath the vehicle and drove him towards the hospital before flagging down an ambulance, the court was told.
Liam was airlifted to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital but could not be saved.
An inquest into the incident on June 7 last year was held at Norwich Coroner's Court today.
The inquest heard Liam was playing outside with his older sister on a hot summer's day when he died.
In a statement, Mrs Turner said she had asked her husband to teach her to drive and decided to move the car a short way to its parking space.
It was the first time she had ever driven the car. She did not have a provisional driving licence and was not insured.
'My foot slipped and it jolted suddenly forward,' she told police.
Mr Turner had supervised her moving the car from outside the vehicle.
Neighbour Amy Jones saw Mrs Turner pulling into the space in a 'stuttering' manner and heard Mr Turner shouting 'stop' followed by a loud crunch.


'Liam was bleeding really badly and I told Stephen to put him in the car and take him to hospital,' she added.

Pc Forbes Scott told the court Mrs Turner was on a public road and should not have been driving but the Crown Prosecution Service had decided it was not in the public interest to bring charges.
'There are no plans to bring any criminal proceedings in this case,' he added. He said there were no faults with the car.
The inquest heard Liam suffered a serious head injury and irreversible brain damage and died at the hospital's accident and emergency department at 8.16pm that day.
Deputy Coroner Nicholas Holroyd recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
He told the couple: 'This was an appalling tragedy and you both have my profound sympathy for this loss.
'There are very few parents who when looking back haven't said to themselves "that was a near thing", tragically this ended as disastrously as it did.'
Mr and Mrs Turner chose not to comment after the hearing.
In a statement issued shortly after his death, the couple said: 'We are devastated by the loss of our darling little man.
'Liam was a happy, content little boy who was always smiling and laughing.
'He had a wonderful sense of humour and brought joy to the lives of everyone who knew him. He was deeply loved.
'Life will not be the same without him.'
