A three-year-old boy has died after a fireplace fell on him in the family home.

He was taken to hospital following the tragic accident at a property in Gateshead on Monday but could not be saved. An investigation has now been launched to establish exactly how it happened.

Yesterday floral tributes were left outside the family home as one neighbour told of the moment the toddler's mother called for help.

Kevin Mitchinson, who waited with her until the ambulance arrived, said: 'His mum came running into my house crying saying that the fireplace had fallen.
'It was terrible, I waited with her until the ambulance arrived.


'They are a lovely, quiet family, it's hard to accept what has happened. All our thoughts are with them.'

Fellow neighbour Joseph Jackson said: 'It's nice to see the flowers, to know that they have support.

'It's horrible to think of something like this happening.'

Simon Michaels added: 'It's hard to believe something like this has happened, it's heartbreaking. Life is so unfair.'

The toddler was taken to hospital following the tragic accident at a property in Gateshead on Monday but could not be saved. A message outside the home read: 'Baby Jack, we still can't believe your gone [sic]'
Reverend Claire Cullingworth, of nearby St Alban's Church, told the Newcastle Chronicle: 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. I heard about it via Facebook. It's just unimaginable.
'As a parent with my own kids, my heart goes out to them. It's just horrible.'
Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
A spokesman added: 'There is no third party involvement. A report is being prepared for the coroner.'
Officers and paramedics were called to the home in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, at around 4pm on Monday.
The boy was taken to the town's Queen Elizabeth Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

A mother accidentally killed her three-year-old son while learning to drive the family car for the first time, an inquest heard today.
Mother-of-two Lyndsay Turner, 34, described how her 'foot slipped' and her Citroen C4 'jolted forward' and ran over her much-loved little boy Liam.
Mrs Turner was pulling into a parking area near their home in Adland Road, Watton, Norfolk, when she hit her son as he played nearby.
The boy's father Stephen, 37, moved the toddler from underneath the vehicle and drove him towards the hospital before flagging down an ambulance, the court was told.
Liam was airlifted to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital but could not be saved.
An inquest into the incident on June 7 last year was held at Norwich Coroner's Court today.
The inquest heard Liam was playing outside with his older sister on a hot summer's day when he died.
In a statement, Mrs Turner said she had asked her husband to teach her to drive and decided to move the car a short way to its parking space.
It was the first time she had ever driven the car. She did not have a provisional driving licence and was not insured.
'My foot slipped and it jolted suddenly forward,' she told police.
Mr Turner had supervised her moving the car from outside the vehicle.
Neighbour Amy Jones saw Mrs Turner pulling into the space in a 'stuttering' manner and heard Mr Turner shouting 'stop' followed by a loud crunch.


'Liam was bleeding really badly and I told Stephen to put him in the car and take him to hospital,' she added.

Pc Forbes Scott told the court Mrs Turner was on a public road and should not have been driving but the Crown Prosecution Service had decided it was not in the public interest to bring charges.
'There are no plans to bring any criminal proceedings in this case,' he added. He said there were no faults with the car.
The inquest heard Liam suffered a serious head injury and irreversible brain damage and died at the hospital's accident and emergency department at 8.16pm that day.
Deputy Coroner Nicholas Holroyd recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
He told the couple: 'This was an appalling tragedy and you both have my profound sympathy for this loss.
'There are very few parents who when looking back haven't said to themselves "that was a near thing", tragically this ended as disastrously as it did.'
Mr and Mrs Turner chose not to comment after the hearing.
In a statement issued shortly after his death, the couple said: 'We are devastated by the loss of our darling little man.
'Liam was a happy, content little boy who was always smiling and laughing.
'He had a wonderful sense of humour and brought joy to the lives of everyone who knew him. He was deeply loved.
'Life will not be the same without him.'

The family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler have spoken of their 'torment and pain' after her killer Levi Bellfield finally gave details of his shocking crimes.
In a harrowing statement, the family, who only learned of Milly's final hours 13 years after her death, said the teenager was raped in broad daylight and tortured before being strangled.
The family said they hoped Milly's 'soul, at long last, can finally rest in peace' now that the serial killer has given his account.

Milly was snatched from the street while on her way from school to her home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002.
Her body was found in a wood in Yateley Heath, Hampshire - 25 miles from Walton-on-Thames.
Bellfield, 47, who now calls himself Yusuf Rahim, was given a whole-life prison sentence in June 2011 for the brutal slaughter of the teenager, but only admitted killing her after four years in prison.
It emerged today that he would only speak to female officers from Surrey Police when he decided to confess and gave them disturbing details of how he repeatedly raped, tortured and murdered Milly.


The family's statement contains the shocking details of Milly's final hours at the hands of Bellfield.
They state: 'Bellfield told the police that after abducting Milly and assaulting her at his flat a few yards from Walton Station, he then drove her to his Mother's house. He reversed down a long driveway and then raped her in broad daylight over the boot of his car.
'Bellfield then moved her to another location, where the rape and torture continued for a number of hours, until the next day when he finally strangled her to death.'

Bellfield only admitted killing Milly when an investigation was launched in to whether he had an accomplice, after he bragged to a fellow prison inmate about his crime
The family were told not to tell anyone about the information they had been given due to an investigation into a possible accomplice.
Last month Surrey Police said they had arrested a man in his 40s, but the suspect was released without charge after just 10 hours because there was no evidence.
Milly's family's statement continued: 'Hearing Bellfield's account of how Milly spent her final hours before being murdered was shocking enough, but the news that there could have been another individual involved was devastating.
'There are no words to describe the additional torment and pain we have been going through since we were told this information.'

They added: 'We had to remain silent for eight months whilst the police conducted their investigation. Finally, when they made the arrest of the suspected accomplice, the person was questioned and released without charge in less than 10 hours as there was no evidence found.
'The pressure this has put us under as a family has been unimaginable and has taken its toll on all of us. We have had to fight every step of the way to get this far.'
Bellfield was already in jail for the murders of Amelie Delagrange and Marsha McDonnell when he was convicted, and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, when he went on trial accused of killing Milly.
In 2008 he had been given a whole-life term for murdering Ms McDonnell, 19, in 2003, and murdering Ms Delagrange, 22, and attempting to murder Ms Sheedy, 18, in 2004.
