This is the dramatic moment a policeman was confronted by a man wielding an eight-inch knife - and came within inches of having his throat cut.

The terrifying footage was captured on PC Alex Prentice's body-cam after he was called to an incident on an estate in Corby, Northamptonshire.

The officer attended the area with a colleague and the pair came face-to-face with a man who immediately brandished a blade and moved towards them.

Insight: The footage captured the life of a police officer, who is required to risk their own well-being for the safety of other people
The video gives a startling insight into the life of a police officer, who is required to risk their own well-being for the safety of other people.
And shows just how important body cameras are becoming to modern day policing.

Returning to the scene of the shocking incident, which occurred in March 2014, PC Prentice has provided a running commentary on the events.

In the clip, the officer says: 'As we came round a corner, we're confronted by a male.

'I said to him 'All right, chap, what's going on?'. At that point he's pulled out a carving knife.'

The knife-wielding man then approaches the two officers, who can be heard repeatedly telling him to drop the weapon.

Threat: The police officer said that when the man came at him with the knife he was shouting 'It's just me and you now'

The officers then hit him with pepper spray, but it does not appear to have any effect - instead the angered man shouts, 'come on then'.

Remembering the incident, PC Prentice says: 'As he comes towards me across the grass area, he's shouting 'It's just me and you now'.

'His eyes are bulging. He's looking very, very angry. Big arm movements, he's got clenched fists, he's making stabbing movements with the knife.

'It was 'good grief, he's trying to stab us with a knife'. You go from sort of relaxed when arriving on scene to practically fighting for your life.'

Later the man lashed out at PC Prentice, cutting the protective cover on the front of the body-camera - coming within inches off the officer's throat.

The policeman eventually neutralised his attacker by hitting him on the arm and head with his baton.

PC Prentice stated he used a choice word when making the arrest.

He said: 'We have to communicate at a level that's appropriate to the person we're dealing with. If I'm making nice requests, he's not going to understand what I need him or want him to do.'

The officer later admitted that after the incident he got what he calls 'the adrenalin shakes', which lasted about an hour.

His attacker was later jailed for three and a half years.

The footage will be featured on ITV programme Heroes and Villains: Caught on Camera, which will broadcast tonight at 9pm.

A woman who survived a horrific cafe blast that claimed the lives of two people last year has made an incredible recovery.
Noeleen Avenell, 52, was given just a five per cent chance of survival after a fire ripped through the Serves You Right cafe in Ravenshoe when a car hit a gas canister outside the restaurant.
The single mother-of-two, from Millstream in far-north Queensland, is finally home after a month in a coma, four months in intensive care and 18 operations, the Courier Mail reported.

'I was up in flames, covered in boiling oil, watching the skin and flesh dripping off my body, and I thought "I'm dead",' she said, recalling her horrific ordeal.
Ms Avenell is required to wear a full-body compression suit that also covers her face, after suffering burns to almost 60 per cent of her body.

Her face was the most badly damaged park of her body, and the 52-year-old said her ankles were the only part left untouched by the fire.
'That was how they dragged me out, by the ankles.'
But the brave mother-of-two has learned to walk again since the accident, and is finally back at home despite still needing to attend daily physiotherapy sessions.
She also spoke about cafe manager Nicole Nyholt, who tragically died during Queensland's largest mass burn disaster, describing her as a 'legend'.
Ms Avenell said her horrific experience helped her to appreciate life and not take it for granted, and she felt blessed that she would now get to see her grandchildren grow up.
Horrific CCTV footage shows the moment an out-of-control 4WD smashed into a 420 kilogram gas canister, engulfing the cafe in flames and injuring 19 people in June 9, 2015.
Ms Avenell said when the vehicle hit the wall right near the kitchen she was working in as a chef, the explosion was so intense she was 'inhaling fire'.
She said she was conscious the entire time.
