The history of surfing has been captured in a series of spectacular photographs that chart its evolution as both a sport and a lifestyle through the ages.
The incredible images, which date back centuries, capture surfers maintaining their boards in Hawaii in the 1890s and catching waves in California in the early 1900s.
There are also shots of people relaxing on Bondi Beach in the 1930s, and surfers riding massive waves in the current day.

The photographs have been compiled into a new book, which provides a comprehensive visual history of the water sport.
The book entitled 'Surfing 1778-2015' was authored by Jim Heimann and features more than 900 timeless images.


It traces surfing culture from the first recorded European contact by Captain James Cook, in 1778, to the global and multi-platform phenomenon of today.

Jim's book was published by TASCHEN and utilised institutions, collections and photographic archives from around the world - as well as including essays from the world's top surf journalists.

It was estimated by the International Surfing Association that there are more than 20 million surfers worldwide.
The sport has influenced fashion, film, music and art over the years.
Jim Heimann, who grew up near the beach in Southern California, said: 'Surfing is a complex and unique sport.
'Its evolution from the crude ability to hang on to a floating piece of wood and be propelled on the face of a wave to today's contest-infested international community is a labyrinth of places, personalities, and emotions.

'It can be competitive or pursued for sheer pleasure, it can be can be experienced alone or with a group.
'It can be unpredictable and lethal, benign and thunderous, ecstatic and satisfying.
