Meanwhile in the UK half a million public sector workers took to the streets to protest governmental plans to change their pensions and freeze pay. In Washington the debt ceiling talks seem to be leading nowhere either - and all of this is backed by some more bad news: the latest jobless numbers are in and last week jobless claims were at about 428,000. That means for the last 12 weeks jobless claims have remained over 400,000. Gerard Celente, the director of the Trends Research Institute, shares his thoughts.

Search Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is an international peace mission to settle the dispute in Libya, as announced by Communications Minister Andres Izarra Venezuela on Wednesday. The minister said in a message on his website on Twitter: "We get talks between Chavez and the leader Gaddafi about the proposal to send a peace mission to Libya," but gave no further details.

The Chavez may view the formation of an international peace mission from several friendly countries in order to mediate between the Libyan leader and the rebels, with the conviction of any foreign military intervention, saying it would be "a disaster". "What if we send Marines instead of airplanes, good-offices mission to help our brothers to stop killing each other."

In most elections, the question is about who might win. In the case of Afghanistan, which will elect the lower house of its parliament on September 18, the focus is on whether they can be held in a credible manner across the country. So far a number of election workers and a candidate have already been kidnapped. Journalist Kelley Vlahos said the US has used the elections, both in Iraq and Afghanistan as symbols of freedom and progress; however it is unlikely this election will highlight progress. She said these elections will more likely show the failures of international efforts in Afghanistan and illustrate the corruption in the Afghan government.
